Multiple Sclerosis Q & A
Understanding multiple sclerosis helps patients and families recognize symptoms early and explore effective treatment options with their neurologist.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord, called myelin. This damage disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body and can lead to a wide range of neurological symptoms.
MS is often diagnosed in adults between the ages of 20 and 40, though it can occur at any age. The course of the disease varies from person to person — some experience mild symptoms, while others develop more progressive disability over time.

What Symptoms Does Multiple Sclerosis Cause?
Symptoms of MS depend on which areas of the central nervous system are affected. Common symptoms include:
- Numbness or tingling in the face, body, or extremities
- Weakness or difficulty walking
- Vision problems, including blurred or double vision
- Fatigue and cognitive changes
- Muscle stiffness, spasms, or spasticity
- Balance problems and dizziness
- Bladder or bowel changes

How is Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosed?
There is no single test that confirms MS. Diagnosis typically involves a careful neurological examination, a detailed medical history, and supporting studies. Your neurologist may order MRI imaging of the brain and spinal cord, lumbar puncture (spinal fluid analysis), and evoked potential testing to help identify areas of demyelination and rule out other conditions.
Early and accurate diagnosis is important so that treatment can begin as soon as appropriate.

How is Multiple Sclerosis Treated?
While there is no cure for MS, many treatments can help manage symptoms, reduce relapse frequency, and slow disease progression. Care may include disease-modifying therapies, medications for symptom control, physical therapy, lifestyle guidance, and ongoing monitoring.
Dr. Reddy works with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan based on their symptoms, disease course, and overall health goals.
