Migraine Q & A

What Exactly Are Migraine Headaches?

Migraines are headaches that can be debilitating. They’re extremely painful, and they’re frequently accompanied by an extreme sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises. Patients might also feel nauseated or vomit while experiencing a migraine. Migraines can last for anywhere from a few hours to more than a day.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Migraine Headaches?

Doctors usually recommend using medication to treat migraines. There are many medications available. Certain anti-seizure medicines, cardiovascular medicines, antidepressants, and pain relieving medicines can also help alleviate the symptoms that migraines cause. Even Botox® injections have proven effective at preventing migraines.

When Botox is used, patients must come to a doctor’s office once every few weeks for an injection. The injection doesn’t take long to administer, though, and it doesn’t hurt. Patients who are being treated with Botox often don’t need to take oral medication daily.

What is a Migraine Appointment Like?

Going to a doctor for migraine headaches is a lot like going to a doctor for any other medical condition. The appointment usually begins with some preliminary paperwork and a patient may take vital signs and a medical history. The doctor will then discuss the patient’s symptoms with them and perform an examination.

After the exam, the doctor will make a diagnosis and recommend a course of treatment. If the doctor recommends oral medication, they’ll likely write a prescription. If they recommend Botox, an injection might be administered during the same appointment, or another appointment may be scheduled for the Botox injection. At the end of the appointment, a follow-up appointment is usually scheduled to make sure the recommended treatment is effective.

What Should a Patients Who Have Migraine Headaches Look for in a Physician?

When looking for a doctor to see, patients who have migraine headaches should seek out a neurologist. Neurologists focus on medical issues related to the nervous system and brain, and they’re uniquely qualified to treat migraines.
