Seizures and epilepsy

Epilepsy is brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally. In epilepsy the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions and behaviors, or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms and loss of consciousness. About 1 in 100 people have experienced an unprovoked seizure or been diagnosed with epilepsy. Only when a person has had two or more seizures are they considered to have epilepsy.

IMPORTANT NOTE

*Florida law states a person must be seizure free for six months before driving*

Doctors have developed a number of different tests to determine whether a person has epilepsy and if so, what type of seizures they have. Testing can include EEG monitoring, brain scans such as MRIs, blood tests, taking an accurate medical history, and other developmental, neurological, and behavioral tests.
Accurate diagnosis of the type of epilepsy a person has is crucial for finding an effective treatment. Once epilepsy is diagnosed it is important to begin treatment as soon as possible. The most common approach to treating epilepsy is anti-epileptic medication. Of course the type of medication depends on the type of seizures a person has.
