The four main symptoms of Parkinson's disease are tremor (trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw or head), rigidity (stiffness of the limbs and trunk), bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability (impaired balance). These symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen with time. Parkinson's disease is both chronic and progressive.
Currently there are no blood or laboratory tests that have been proven to help in diagnosing Parkinson's disease. Therefore diagnosis is based on medical history and a neurological examination. Doctors may sometime request brain scans such as MRIs or blood work to rule out other diseases.
